I'm Eva, 16 years old. I live in Haren, the Netherlands. I live with my parents and my sister. I also have three cats My hobby's are going out and modeling. I've been a model for almost a year now. I also have a boyfriend, who is very sweet, for almost two years now.

I'm luisa and Iam 18 years old. I live in Groningen, the Netherlands. I live with my parents and I am the youngest. I have two sisters and a brother and I also have a little niece. My hobby's are soccer and dancing.

 1. I know the Anne Frank's story, we discussed the topic in different classes like history and now this class. I haven't read her diary, but I would still like to read it someday.

2. I have never been to the Anne Frank's house myself, but my uncle, who lives in Amsterdam had been there a few times with his daughter.

3. Nowadays we don't often speak about her anymore, it's not that you hear her name very often. Maybe in history classes that are about this topic. You could say that she's a famous figure.

1.. I never hear my parents or grandparents talk about the war. Maybe if someone asks for it, but it's not something that you discuss daily. I have learned about the Holocaust in school, not the very shocking parts, most of the times you read that in books or see that in movies. I have seen some documentary's about the Holocaust. most of the times the documentary was about the horror that took place.

2. The war hasn't had any impact on my life. I feel sorry for the family of the victims, but that's all. I did have a grandpa who was with the resistance. Unfortunately I have never had the chance to ask him about it.

3. We do celebrate May 5. We have this festival where we always go to to celebrate. For most people it's just a festival. but I still think some people really go there to celebrate it. Almost everyone in our country watches the memorial on May 4th. Everyone is suposed to be quiet for 2 minutes and think about the victims of the war.

4. I don't know how many Jews were killed, I do know that there were too many. As said, my grandpa was with the resistance so I think he helped some Jews too.

5. I didn't know that, but I hope they had a good reason for it, or maybe were forced to do it.

1. Nowadays, there is no hate like after the war. They maybe are Germans, but that doesn't mean they did something wrong. It's not their fault what their former relatives did. On the contrary, there is some tension in soccer games between the two countries. I think the war actually has something to do with that.

2. Yes, we hear stereotypes alot, that they're fat, drink much beer, and  that their language is stupid. I don't know if the war has had any influence about it.

1. My great-grandmother was Jewish. I never had any Jewish children in my class, not that I know at least.

2. We discussed about it because People from Rotterdam have their football club, Feyenoord. Amsteram has Ajax. people from Ajax are sometimes made out for Jews, in a bad way, they sings songs about them, they abuse the word etc.

3. As said,  there is anti-semitism in the Ajax-Feyenoord rivalry.

  1. 1. I have learned a lot about World War II. In our school we learn about it in two different years. The subject of the Holocaust was very interesting to me and I wanted to learn more about it so I decided to take this class. I know about Anne Frank and many other survivors and I know a lot of the different horrific events that when on during World War II.

    2. I do not have any relatives that experienced the war.

    3. There isn't really anything bad said about Germans now. But most don't agree with how the Germans acted during the war.

    4. I have only heard stories of people that were part of the resistance. I think it is an amazing thing what they did!

    5. I do not know a lot. We have discussed this topic a little bit in class but this is a part of Holocaust I don't know much about.

    Amerika

    1. I love the University. We have different times everyday that we start and end school. We don't go to a class for the whole day. We go to different classes at different times throughout the day.

    2. I chose this class because I was/am very interested in learning more about the Holocaust. When I heard that it was about Anne Frank I wanted to know more about her story and what happened after the Diary(hiding).

    3. I have read parts of Anne Frank's diary but not in school. I do like it. I think it shows a different perspective of someone during the Holocaust than I normally hear about.

    4. Yes I do talk about this topic. I talk about it the most with other people when I am learning about the Holocaust.

    Thanks for answering our questions!

  2. Hallo! Mijn naam is Ben. Ik ben zevenentwintig. Ik kom uit Tennessee maar ik woon in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
I am currently learning Dutch, and I am in my second semester of the class. My hobbies are Amerika voetbal, hiking, and working out.

    1. I have studied World War II in high school and college. It was covered in depth in my U.S History class. Also, in one of my literature classes, we studied specifically the Holocaust portion of the war.

    2. My grandmother was born in The Netherlands in 1939. She lived there with her family throughout the war. Her house was bombed twice by the Germans.

    3. I don't have an opinion about Germans. They are people just like you and I. I don't think all Germans were bad during the war. Some were forced to do things they did not want to do and others even tried to kill Hitler.

    4. My great grandmother was in the resistance. My grandmother has told me a few stories from that time. I don't personally know anyone else. I have only read and heard what they went through.

    5. I know it is also called the Night of Broken Glass. It was where the Jewish owned stores, buildings, and synagogues had their windows broken out. Glass was all over the streets is why it is called Night of Broken Glass.

    1. University of Michigan is difficult for me. I don't live in the city so it takes me about 40 minutes to get to school. I usually leave my house at 0645. I get back home anywhere between 1800 and 2100. It depends on the day.

    2. I chose this class because I like history. I think it is important to learn and remember the things that got us to where we are now.

    3. I have read Anne Frank's diary. It was a very interesting book to read. I did enjoy it, but I don't think it focuses on the Holocaust.

    4. I do not talk about the topic. It might come up sometimes but usually the only time is for class or a paper.

    Tot ziens!

  3. Hi! My name is Haley, I am from Minnesota and am 50% Dutch.

    1. I know a lot about WWII because I have taken many classes that discuss the topic. In high school I took a class called American History that talked about WWII from an American perspective. Also my family members fought for the US in WWII so I have heard about their experiences in the war too.

    2. Specifically, my Grandpa's brothers were in the Navy in the Pacific during WWII. They both were commanders of very large ships.

    3. I don't really have an opinion on Germans, I am studying abroad there this summer in Koblenz, so I will find out then. I don't think all Germans were bad during the war because there were probably some who did not participate in the activities of the Nazis.

    4. I don't know anyone who was in the resistance.

    5. I don't know what Crystal Night is.

    ______

    1. I really enjoy college. I am a sophomore majoring in economics. That means I have two more years left of school before I try and find a real job. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays I only have class for one hour so it's not too bad. Sometimes I wish I could go home for a weekend, but since I live so far away I can't.

    2. I chose this class because all of my family is Dutch and I almost lived in Amsterdam when I was young so I wanted to learn more.

    3. This is the second time I have read Anne's Diary and I enjoy learning about her experience during the war.

    4. I tell my friends about what we learn in class sometimes, and most people have read the Diary so they think its cool that I get to read it for a class.

  4. Hallo!

    1. Since I did my high school in the Netherlands I had learned about World War II in my history class. However we didn't focus too much on the Holocaust, but more on the politics of the war. I also visited one of the concentration camps in Berlin, where I was able to learn more in depth about the Holocaust and what actually went on in the camps.

    2. No I do not have any relatives who did since my whole family is from India.

    3. While living in the Netherlands I had a lot of friends who are German. I don't think that all Germans were bad during the war since there may have been some who did not follow Nazi beliefs and ideologies.

    4. No I do not know anyone who has been in resistance.

    5. I have never heard of what the Crystal Night is.

    Amerika:

    1. I came as an international student to the University of Michigan, but since I was used to living abroad it wasn't very difficult for me to adjust. Everybody has their own schedule since we get to choose which classes we want to take and which ones fit with our degree. Usually I go to class at 10am and then finish my day by around 4pm. The rest of the time is used for studying, extra activities or just free time with friends!

    2. Since I had lived in The Netherlands for 6 years I thought this would be an interesting class since I could personally connect with a lot of aspects such as Dutch culture. Since I had never really had an in depth understand of Anne Frank and the Holocaust I figured this would be a good opportunity for me.

    3. I did not read the diary in school, but I had visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam and got a copy of the diary. I had never really read the whole thing - only bits and pieces of it and always found it very interesting to read, especially since it was written by someone young. After reading it, it's still very hard for me to imagine that it's all real and the Frank family was one of the many families who had to go through so much.

    4. Ever since I started taking this class, I always have something new to share to my friends when I meet them after the lesson. They also always listen to me with such interest because none of us had ever studied it in so much depth and learnt about the small details.

    Bedankt!
    Neha

  5. Hallo, ik ben Jeff. Ik ben zesentwintig en ik kom uit New York maar ik woon in Ann Arbor.

    1. How much do you know about World War II? Have you learned much about it in school? I know a fair bit about the war as it has been the focus of many of my history classes.

    2. Do you have any relatives that experienced the war? Most of my family from that generation fought in the war.

    3. What's your opinion about the Germans? Do you think all Germans were bad during the war? I lived in southern Germany for a couple years and they were not very keen on us Americans so my opinion of them is somewhat sour. I certainly don't think all Germans were bad during the war though, as many were arrested and put into work camps for speaking out.

    4. Do you know people who has been in the resistance? Do you know what they've been trough? I do not.

    5. How much do you know about the Crystal night? That it was a Nazi organized assault on Jewish businesses and synagogues.

    Amerika

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school? University in the US varies quite a bit, as I'm sure it does everywhere. Some days it's a lot of fun, other days it's downright awful. I usually get to school between 8 and 10, and get home between 1600 and 1900 depending on the day.

    2. Why did you choose this class? Annemarie is my Dutch professor and spoke to us on how interesting the class is and since I enjoy history, I decided to take it.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it? I read the diary many years ago in elementary school as well as many other books we had to read regarding the Holocaust. It was okay.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends. Ben Creekmore, from above, and myself discuss it almost daily.

  6. Hi my name is Courtney Wright and I am 21 years old. I am currently a junior at the University of Michigan. I am from Flushing, MI, which is just outside of Flint, MI.

    1. How much do you know about World War II? Have you learned much about it in school?
I have learned about WWII in class but I couldn't recite specific dates or anything like that.

    2. Do you have any relatives that experienced the war?
None that I am currently aware of.

    3. What's your opinion about the Germans? Do you think all Germans were bad during the war?
I don't think you can say that all Germans were bad during the war. It would be like saying all southerners were racist when the US had slavery. You simply cannot place an umbrella term like this all everyone just because it was a profound historical moment.

    4. Do you know people who has been in the resistance? Do you know what they've been trough?
I don't know anyone who was in the resistance. We have read several stories where many of the resistors said that they felt it was a full-time job.

    5. How much do you know about the Crystal night?
I have read several personal accounts about it but that was years ago!

    Amerika

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school?
University is amazing. You decide your own schedule..when you go to sleep..when you go to class..etc. It's a lot different from high school (unless of course you stayed home and commute to school) and I study a lot more than I ever have before. However, I have made some pretty amazing friends along the way. My daily schedule really depends on what time the class is offered. Sometimes I have class at 8am and other days at 12pm. Some days I finish at 12pm and others at 6pm.

    2. Why did you choose this class?
I have always been interested in the Holocaust and I also needed humanities credits, which this class fulfills!

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it?
I read the diary back in the 8th grade and I re-read it for this class. I really like the diary and I think it has a lot of mature thoughts and ideas. It gives a different view on the Holocaust and shows a different experience.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends.
I definitely talk about this topic more now that I am in this class! But before it not as much.

  7. Hi my name is Clare Furuta I am 21 years old and currently a Senior at the University of Michigan. I am from New Baltimore, MI which is only about an hour away from U of M.

    1. How much do you know about World War II? Have you learned much about it in school?
I only know what I have learned in school. I mostly learned about WWII in grade school and am now learning more about it in my Humanities course. However, before this class I probably couldn't tell you very specific details about it.

    2. Do you have any relatives that experienced the war?
My grandfather were taken to a Japanese American internment camp in the US during the war. Everything was taken from him and when he was released, he had nothing to go back to. He had to start over and find a way to support himself.

    3. What's your opinion about the Germans? Do you think all Germans were bad during the war?
I don't think that all Germans were bad during the war. I think that many people were influenced by those around them and did what they thought was "right" at the time. However, there were many Germans who were not involved and even though they may have not done anything to stop the Nazis or help the Jewish people, they shouldn't be considered bad.

    4. Do you know people who has been in the resistance? Do you know what they've been trough?
I do not know anyone personally but we have been reading about many people involved in the Resistance in class. Many of them had to go against their own personal morals in order to help those who needed it and were being persecuted by the Nazis.

    5. How much do you know about the Crystal night?
I know it as the Night of Broken Glass. I think that is the same event that you are asking about. Again, we have learned a lot about it in class and read personal accounts.

    Amerika

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school?
I love going to the University of Michigan. You can schedule your own classes so sometimes I have classes in the morning and other times my classes are later in the evening. Right now, my classes do not start until 1pm or 4pm so I have all morning to do homework, work, or exercise. I have made so many friends here and I am a little sad about graduating.

    2. Why did you choose this class?
I chose this class because I wanted a chance to read the Diary of Anne Frank again and I wanted to learn more about the Holocaust. Sadly, I have only learned small facts about it and I think that it should be taught more thoroughly in schools in America.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it?
I read it when I was in 7th grade so I didn't remember much about it until I reread it for this class. I enjoyed reading it both then and now. However, I think that my interpretation and understanding of the book is different now compared to before.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends.
I've noticed that I talk a lot more about this topic now that I have taken this course. I come home from class and talk with my roommates about what I have learned that day. However, it is a little sad that people have to take a class before they realize the importance of something or talk about it with others and inform them of what they have learned. That being said, I am really glad that I am taking this course!

  8. Hi my name is Claudia Scheinman and I am a senior at the University of Michigan but am from Roslyn, New York which is about thirty minute from Manhattan.

    1. How much do you know about World War II? Have you learned much about it in school?

I have learned about World War II in school from a very early age. I am Jewish and have also learned about it in Hebrew school. Both my grandfathers both fought in the Navy during the war as well.

    2. Do you have any relatives that experienced the war?

As I stated above, both my Grandfathers were in the Navy during World War II.

    3. What's your opinion about the Germans? Do you think all Germans were bad during the war?

I definitely don't think that all Germans were bad during the war. However, I don't think enough Germans stood up for what they believed to be right. They saw what was happening with the Nazi party and what they were doing to the Jews but not enough took a stand, fearing their own lives.

    4. Do you know people who has been in the resistance? Do you know what they've been trough?

I don't personally know anyone who has been in the resistance.

    5. How much do you know about the Crystal night?

I think you are talking about the night of broken glass or, kristallnacht. I know that it was the night that Jewish owned stores, shops, homes, and synagogues were broken into and destroyed. Many were killed, injured, and traumatized from these events.

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school?

University in America is amazing. Your schedule consists of what you want it to be. Meaning, you make your own schedule so everyone is on their own timing. I have class most days around noon which last until 6 PM.

    2. Why did you choose this class?

I chose this class because for starters-I am Jewish. I am extremely interested in the story of Anne Frank and thought it would be a great learning experience. I also just got back from Israel after 5 months where I learned a lot about the Holocaust and wanted to continue learning more.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it?

I read Anne Frank's diary in school, and also read it in Hebrew School. I actually visited the Anne Frank house last March and decided to read it again this past year.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends.

Sometimes. It depends who I am with and the context of the situation. After I visited in March I spoke about it often.

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school?

    2. Why did you choose this class?
I chose this class because I have a Jewish background and have always been fascinated with Anne Frank because my Grandmother is a Holocaust survivor. I take any chance I get to learn about history connected to my family. I am also involved on campus in Holocaust Awareness groups.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it?
I read Anne Frank in my free time when I was much younger. I loved it!

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends.
I do talk about this topic all the time. I try and talk with my Grandmother about it, as well as people I feel close to. It is so important to talk and express our feelings to pass along the message "Never Forget"

  13. Hello, My name is Tyra, I'm 22 and have been attending the University of Michigan for 5 years now.
    1. How much do you know about World War II? Have you learned much about it in school? I know a bit about WWII but definitely not as much as I could. Everything that I have learned about WWII came from school because my high school taught all students world history.

    2. Do you have any relatives that experienced the war? None that I know of, any of my relatives who would have been old enough to actually fight in the war all passed before I was born.

    3. What's your opinion about the Germans? Do you think all Germans were bad during the war? I don't think that all Germans were bad during the war, just like in every other country in Europe I'm sure there were people who were helping to hide the Jewish people they could and protect them from the Nazis.

    4. Do you know people who has been in the resistance? Do you know what they've been trough? I didn't know anyone who was in the resistance but we've read stories about those who resisted Nazi power and control.

    5. How much do you know about the Crystal night?
I don't know very much about the Crystal Night but I'm pretty sure that I have heard of it at least once.

    Amerika

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school? I love going to University in America but then again I've never known anything else. I only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have to leave for classes at 8 am and get home a little after 4 pm.

    2. Why did you choose this class? I chose this class because I needed a Humanities course in order to graduate and I thought that it sounded like a really interesting class. I had also studied Anne Frank's Diary in Junior High and thought it would be nice to learn about it again when I was older and might understand the different complexities.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it? I read her diary in Junior High and really enjoyed it at the time, I've been reading it again for this class and have realized that there are parts of the diary that I have forgotten over time.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends. I enjoy sharing this topic and everything I learn in class with my boyfriend because he likes to hear about the things that I learn in my classes.

  14. Hi! I'm Madi, I'm 20 and a student at the University of Michigan. Here are the answers to some of your questions:

    1. How much do you know about World War II? Have you learned much about it in school?
I took a very comprehensive history course in high school, and we covered World War II a lot, but more of a movement overall. The focus was mostly what happened because of the war, not the specific battles or people involved.

    2. Do you have any relatives that experienced the war?
No; I've done a lot of reading, but my grandpa was actually in the Navy the only four consecutive years America has not been in war.

    3. What's your opinion about the Germans? Do you think all Germans were bad during the war?
Not at all; I think that there were bad people in every country during the war, and I think that it must have been harder for Germans to resist since they were right in the middle of everything. Everyone had difficult choices to make.

    4. Do you know people who has been in the resistance? Do you know what they've been trough?
No, I just have heard speakers talk in class about their experiences.

    5. How much do you know about the Crystal night?
Nothing concrete, just things I've read quickly online. I'm hoping to learn more about it!

    Amerika

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school?
In high school, I went to school from 8-2:30 Monday through Friday, but now I have a much better schedule. I only have an hour and a half of class on Mondays and Wednesdays, and I go from 10-4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

    2. Why did you choose this class?
I was looking for a class to fulfill a specific requirement, and I came across this one. I try to take classes that interest me and also help me to fulfill credits to graduate, and I realized that I didn't know much about the Holocaust and that it was something I wanted to learn more about.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it?
I read the diary in middle school, but it was never assigned to me. I liked reading it, but I also thought that it was extremely sad to read. Now, I have a different perspective on it.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends.
Yes, I talk about this class to my friends and my roommate; they're interested in it! I also tell my mom about it when I call home.

  15. Hi! My name is Danielle Glantz, I am a senior at the University of Michigan and I am very happy to answer your questions.

    Amerika

    1. How is University in Amerika? At what time do you leave for and come home from school?

University in the United States is incredible. I absolutely love the university I attend, even though my family lives home in New Jersey and I live out here in Michigan. School has helped me grow in so many ways and I have thrived academically and socially. My class schedule is different every day. Some days I have one class for 3 hours, some days I have two classes for 4 hours, and two days a week I have no class! I love my schedule and I take classes that I really enjoy. I also enjoy coming home to my best friends who I live with. We are always with each other!

    2. Why did you choose this class?

I choose this class because I have a strong interest in learning about Anne Frank, the Holocaust, and of my Jewish roots in Europe. I have learned a great deal about the Holocaust throughout my entire life and I felt as though I had not learned as much when I came to University. As my final year, I thought it would be excellent to reconnect with everything I have learned previously, and to touch up on concepts or events that I am unfamiliar with.

    3. Have you read Anne Frank's diary in school? Did you like it?

I have read Anne Frank's diary more than once. I absolutely love reading her diary although I always get extremely emotional upon reading it. I find as though I can relate to Anne easily. I also have a passion for working with children and whenever I read her story, I become so involved and invested.

    4. Do you talk about this topic after school? With relatives or friends.

I sometimes talk about the events of the holocaust after school with both my family and my friends. Especially with students in the class who are my friends, I find that I talk about these topics with them quite frequently.
